A 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Boston could bring in a flow of athletes, tourists, and sporting events to Lowell, eyed for its spot on the Merrimack River. Olympic Committee's official bid for the 2024 Olympics.

Donoghue said the games could present "tremendous potential" for Lowell in sports, tourism, development and jobs.

Chancellor Marty Meehan said the Tsongas Center was a great venue for boxing and basketball, and noted the Merrimack River's "excellent potential" for rowing.

Evan Falchuk, chairman of the United Independent Party who lost last year's race for governor, also came out against the decision.

"At a time of such need for funding for schools, veterans services and other priorities, all of our newly sworn in leaders must stand against this effort to divert the public interest for private gain," he said in a statement.

On the international level, Rome is the only other city that has already submitted a bid for a shot at hosting in 2024. Germany will submit Hamburg or Berlin, as France and Hungary also consider Olympic bids.
